Scientific Breakthroughs in DNA Sequencing – Color

Danny DeSloover

It took billions of dollars and 13 years to sequence the first human genome, but technological advancements in sequencing have outpaced Moore’s law for the last decade. How is that possible? We take a look at the scientific breakthroughs that got DNA sequencing to where it is today and where it’s headed tomorrow.

Genetic sequencing could be used to determine genetic variation for the full spectrum of human diseases. Personal genomics is set to grow exponentially the coming years. With a saliva sample, doctors today can help people plan for a baby, determine predisposition for developing diseases, and even find targeted therapy based on a tumor’s specific genetic profile. In the future DNA information will be part of a regular health checkup.
